For Shawn’s 16th birthday

Shawn Hornbeck - Exclusive New Pictures & Update

Chris Regnier 14/JUL/07 KTVI
He's been out of the public eye since his miraculous recovery six months ago. Now, just days before his 16th birthday this coming Tuesday, we're getting a new look at former kidnapping victim Shawn Hornbeck.

The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation gave Fox 2 two never before seen photos of Shawn.
They show Shawn, back home now for six months, smiling and relaxed being a kid inside a stock car. The pictures were taken in June at a Shawn Hornbeck Foundation event in Warrenton. We caught up with Shawn’s parents on the phone as they shopped for Shawn’s birthday.

His mom, Pam Akers, said, "I want this to be the Shawn that everyone remembers. That's it's a happy Shawn, it's the Shawn that he's back home. It's the Shawn that's trying to be a normal kid, not the Shawn that was missing four and a half years and what he might have gone through."

Shawn and his parents are pictured in the latest edition of ‘People’ magazine. Pam says one of the toughest things for her has been letting Shawn sleep over at friends’ houses. But she has done it.

"I don't sleep very well at night when I do that but I know it's something I’ve got to do. And it's a big step for him and a big step for me," Pam explained. Shawn's parents can't wait for his 16th birthday.

Shawn's step-father Craig Akers said, "It's a whole lot different from other birthdays that we've observed over the last four and a half years. I say observed and that's because that's what they were-observations. This is the first time that it will be a celebration."

Shawn's parents say Shawn will be ready to testify at any trial against Michael Devlin.

"We fully believe that he is ready, willing, and able and when that time comes, he will step up to the plate and do what he has to do," explained Craig.

Craig and Pam say with home-schooling and private tutoring, Shawn is catching up quickly with his education level. They tell us everyone is looking forward to a golf tournament next Thursday- it's a fundraiser for the foundation but also a celebration of Shawn’s 16th birthday. www.myfoxstl.com

  • Teen kidnapped for years may return to school
Stepdad talks about Mo. boy one day after vandals strike memorial
Shawn Hornbeck, 15, the Missouri boy whose rescue after years of captivity drew international attention, has been tutored privately since his return but is doing so well academically that he may attend a private school in the fall, his stepfather said Monday, July 10.
AP. July 10, 2007 ST. LOUIS - A teenager found more than four years after he was abducted from his hometown has been tutored privately since his astonishing return home in January and may attend a private school in the fall, his stepfather said Monday.

The family deliberates daily about what’s best for Shawn Hornbeck, now 15, whose incidental rescue after years of captivity drew international attention.

“Initially, we thought this would be the easy part,” said Craig Akers, whose stepson did not attend classes while missing. Readjustment, he said, “is difficult in its own way.”

“There’s not a handbook on how to deal with this.”

The comments came a day after Shawn, his family and others cleaned up damage after vandals struck a memorial that had been built in his honor in his rural hometown of Richwoods when he was missing. Police continued to search for suspects Monday after someone drove over the site.

Shawn was 11 when he was abducted while riding his bike near his home in October 2002. In January this year, another boy, 13-year-old Ben Ownby, had been missing for four days when police searched the suburban St. Louis apartment of Michael Devlin, a 41-year-old pizzeria manager. Police were startled to find both boys inside. Devlin is charged with kidnapping and sexual abuse and has pleaded not guilty.

While it is The Associated Press’ policy not to identify suspected victims of sexual abuse in most cases, the story of Shawn and Ben has been widely publicized and their names are now well-known.

    Readjustments all around

Shawn, who has not done interviews since shortly after he was rescued, hopes to graduate from a public high school with his former classmates, Akers said. The family is considering a private school with limited class sizes for the coming school year. He has done well in his studies, especially in science and math.

“It would be feasible for him to rejoin his grade level some time next year,” Akers said.

Shawn is also doing well socially, Akers said. He loves to ride his all-terrain vehicle and is hoping for a motocross bike for his 16th birthday next week. His parents have allowed overnight stays with friends, but he is always supervised and in the presence of a relative or family friend.

Akers said he and his wife, Pam, know that will have to change eventually. “As you can imagine, it’s hard to let him out of your sight,” he said.

In public, some people whisper and point, or approach Shawn and want to shake his hand. The attention can make Shawn uncomfortable, but he understands “he’s been part of a lot of people’s lives,” Akers said.

    Celebrities reach out

Among those reaching out to the boy have been celebrities. Shawn met skateboarding legend Tony Hawk last month. He and his friends got basketball tips from former St. Louis University and Boston Celtics star Ed Macauley. His family tries to keep such meetings, which happened in the St. Louis area, out of the public eye.

“When we do take advantage of an offer, it’s to let Shawn enjoy something he normally wouldn’t have an opportunity to do,” Akers said.

In the future, Akers said, it’s possible Shawn will be more active in the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation, started by the family after Shawn’s disappearance to support child safety and aid in the search for missing children. www.msnbc.msn.com

  • Hornbeck helps clean up damaged memorial

Shawn Hornbeck, the Missouri boy whose rescue following four years of captivity captured international attention, made a rare public appearance to help clean up damage after vandals struck a memorial in his honor.
msnbcmedia.msn.comPolice on Monday continued to search for suspects after someone drove over a bench, tree and garden that had been established while Shawn was missing, a spot that served as inspiration for the family and the small community of Richwoods. The incident happened late Friday or early Saturday.
On Sunday, Shawn joined his family and others in removing the damaged bench, straightening a tree and planting new flowers at the site next to the Lion's Club.

To Shawn's family, the damage was nothing short of cruel.

"That was a big part of our lives. To a lot of people, it's $200 or $300 worth of damage. To us, it's priceless," his stepfather, Craig Akers, said.

Akers on Monday provided a glimpse of the 15-year-old's life in the months since he and another missing boy, 13-year-old Ben Ownby, of Beaufort, were found Jan. 12 at the suburban St. Louis apartment of Michael Devlin, who faces multiple charges for kidnapping and sexual abuse. Shawn has not done interviews since shortly after he was rescued.

  • Devlin Task Force Closes Office
    By Ed Pruneau
    07/13/2007, zwire.com

Members of a special task force investigating a possible link between Michael Devlin and past child abduction cases continue to follow up leads as they come in, but they're no longer working full time out of a central location.
The multi-jurisdictional task force was formed in January following Devlin's arrest on charges that he abducted Ben Ownby of Beaufort earlier that month and Shawn Hornbeck of Richwoods in 2002...
