V.O.
RICHWOODS, MO (KTVI-myFOXstl.com) --

It will be his first Christmas at home since 2001. Wednesday night, it was Shawn Hornbeck in his own words about being home for the special holiday.

FOX 2 was the first media outlet to receive a two paragraph statement written by Shawn.
Shawn Hornbeck Christmas Statement · Declaración de Navidad de Shawn

When I thought about Christmas with my family while I was gone I never dreamed that I would be as close to them- my parents and my sisters- as I
have become since I got home. And now I have an even bigger family, those that I never knew before and some that were born while I was away. Being
home with them all is what makes this Christmas mean so much to me.

It's been a long time since I had a real "kid's Christmas" and when I was little, it was all about toys and fun. I'm really looking forward to celebrating like a
kid this year but I know that the things that happened in my life the last several years make me appreciate my family and the season in ways that I
could have never understood before. There are moms and dads who helped my parents get through Christmases when we were apart by giving them
hope and to them I say "Thank you". And to everyone, thank you for never giving up on me. It's so good to be home for the holidays.

Shawn's parents also gave us never before seen pictures of the 16 year old.

Pam and Craig Akers say after years of agonizing holidays not knowing where Shawn was, having him home is their best Christmas present ever.

Shawn's parents read from the statement.

"When I thought about Christmas with my family while I was gone I never dreamed that I would be as close to them- my parents and sisters- as I have become since I got home," read Craig Akers.

In the statement, Shawn talks about celebrating a "kid's Christmas."

One passage reads, "I'm really looking forward to celebrating like a kid this year but I know that the things that happened in my life the last several years make me appreciate my family and the season in ways that I could have never understood before."

Pam said, "I do know these are his words and he means every bit of it. It just makes me so proud of him."

One of the pictures the Akers gave to us shows Shawn decorating his family's Christmas tree with his two sisters just days ago.

Another shows Shawn with Craig and Pam earlier this month.

And a third one depicts Shawn on his dirt bike on his 16th birthday back in July.

Pam and Craig say Shawn's Christmas list this year is similar to what they think his list would have been back in 2002 when he was kidnapped.

In 2002, Shawn had just gotten a dirt bike- now he has a new one and wants accessories just like five years ago.

"The Christmas list for that year was going to be pants, boots, jerseys, all that kind of equipment. Guess what's at the top of this year's list- same exact thing," explained Craig.

Even though it's been almost a year since Shawn's return, Pam says she still pops her head in his room sometimes just to make sure he's really home.

Pam and Craig wish the families of other missing children hope this holiday season.

"You have to keep that hope alive. That hope is what's going to bring that child home," said Craig.

Shawn's message to people: "To everyone, thank you for never giving up on me. It's so good to be home for the holidays."

Pam and Craig say Shawn is getting nearly straight A's in his private school and he is already taking high school freshman level classes.

They also tell Fox 2 because he's doing so well in school, they're going to let him get his driver's permit next month. www.myfoxstl.com

At the federal sentencing hearing Friday: Michael Devlin received one final sentence Friday -- 170 years -- for making pornography of a boy he kidnapped and sexually assaulted over four years.

Shawn's parents, Craig and Pam Akers, were at the hearing. Craig Akers appeared noticeably pained when Devlin's attorney, Michael Kielty, told the judge that by pleading guilty, Devlin spared the boys and their families "the torture of going to trial."

The Akers told the judge Devlin had shown their son, and those who love him, no mercy and spoke of how they were without him for 1,558 days.

"I don't think any parent can bear the thought of their child being tortured for one day, yet alone four years," Pam Akers said.
